Brussels became the latest European city to be targeted in a terrorist attack as three coordinated blasts killed at least 31, injured more than 230 and deepened the sense of crisis across the continent.
Belgium on Tuesday night was on the highest terror alert level amid fears that further assaults are in the works following twin explosions at the airport and a bombing at a subway station that were the deadliest attacks ever on Belgian soil. Islamic State militants claimed responsibility.
“We will act with all our force to defend ourselves,” Prime Minister Charles Michel told reporters, adding that the country will observe three days of mourning. “Our freedom was hit in the heart this morning in Brussels, as it was several months ago in Paris. It’s a common battle, a battle without borders.”
